چکیده

The composition and pressure of the martian atmosphere allows solar ultraviolet photons as short as 190 nm to penetrate to the surface. The effects of UV photons on the hydration state of minerals has been investigated in the past with mixed results. Andersen and Huguenin [1977] proposed that photons with wavelengths shorter than 280 nm release water from goethite by ejecting OHgroups which subsequently combine with H+ from nearby lattice sites. However, Morris and Lauer [1981] repeated the experiments and found no UV dehydration effects on goethite or lepidocrocite in exposures equivalent to 10 to 100 years on the martian surface.

Evidence that the reactivity of the martian soil is due to superoxide ions.

The Viking Landers were unable to detect evidence of life on Mars but, instead, found a chemically reactive soil capable of decomposing organic molecules. This reactivity was attributed to the presence of one or more as-yet-unidentified inorganic superoxides or peroxides in the martian soil. Using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we show that superoxide radical ions (O2-) form dire...

Stability of hydroxylated minerals on Mars: A study on the effects of exposure to ultraviolet radiation

The density and composition of the Martian atmosphere allow solar ultraviolet photons with wavelengths as short as 190 nm to reach the surface. We investigate the hypothesis that this UV radiation is capable of inducing the release of water from iron oxyhydroxide minerals resulting in the formation of oxide phases. These experiments, which utilize a quadrupole mass spectrometer to monitor the w...

The Effect of Martian Surface Geometry on Ultraviolet Fluxes

Introduction: The atmosphere of Mars, unlike that of the Earth, does little to attenuate incoming ultraviolet radiation. Such large amounts of ultraviolet radiation are known not only to sterilize the hardiest of terrestrial organisms within minutes [1], but to chemically alter the soil such that organic molecules in the upper few cm are rapidly destroyed [2]. Thus the survival of any putative ...

Martian Residents: Mass Media and Ramsar High Background Radiation Areas

Considering current controversies regarding the health effects of low doses of ionizing radiation, study of the high background radiation areas such as Ramsar, Iran can help scientists better evaluate the validity of linear no-threshold (LNT) hypothesis. Ramsar is a coastal city in northern Iran with some areas known to have the highest levels of natural background radiation in the world. The m...

Desorption Kinetics of Heavy Metals (Lead, Zinc, and Nickel) Coexisted with Phenanthrene from a Natural High Buffering Soil

This work aims to investigate the competitive time-dependent desorption rate of heavy metals (lead, zinc, nickel) coexisting with phenanthrene from natural high buffering soil. Two non-ionic surfactants (Tween 80 and Brij 35) combined with disodium ethylene diamine tetraacetate salt (Na2-EDTA) were utilized as the reagents. The contaminants’ time-dependent desorption data was fitted with five k...
